President proposes introducing special status for certain districts of Donbas for one year

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has proposed that parliament introduce for one year a special procedure for local government in certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

This is stated in the text of draft law No. 7164 on the creation of the necessary conditions for a peaceful settlement of the situation in certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which was posted on the parliament website on Wednesday.

"According to this law, a special procedure for local government is introduced in certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which include districts, towns, villages, which are determined by the decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (hereinafter - certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions) for a period ending one year from the date of entry into force of the law of Ukraine on the creation of the necessary conditions for a peaceful settlement of the situation in certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions," reads the bill.

According to the document, the Verkhovna Rada should define such a status, including for further consolidation of the international support of Ukraine in the process of peaceful settlement and the creation of the necessary conditions for the deployment of a UN peacekeeping operation in certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Earlier, the head of state registered in parliament draft law No. 7163 on the peculiarities of state policy on securing Ukraine's state sovereignty over temporarily occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which, among other things, defines certain districts of Donbas as territories temporarily occupied by Russia.
