Court detains police general Budnyk

The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv has chosen a measure of restraint for Head of the Department of Police Security at the National Police of Ukraine Serhiy Budnyk in the form of detention, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office has reported.

"Under a motion submitted by the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine on August 25, 2017, the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv chose a measure of restraint for the head of the Department of Police Security at the National Police of Ukraine and a mediator, who obtained an unlawful benefit, in the form of detention with the possibility of [being released on] bail worth UAH 128,000 for each of them. The pre-trial investigation is underway," reads the report.

On August 22, prosecutors caught Budnyk on a bribe. He demanded, through a mediator, in addition to official payments, over UAH 80,000 per month for the provision of physical protection.

Budnyk is a police general of the third rank, honored lawyer of Ukraine. In 2008-2010, he worked as deputy chief of the State Automobile Inspection Department. In 2010-2014, he headed the Center for Road Safety and Automated Systems at the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. From October 2014, he served as acting head of the Department of State Guard Service.
