Yanukovych gets new lawyer in treason trial

The Regional Center for the Provision of Free Secondary Legal Aid in Kyiv has chosen Maksym Herasko as a new lawyer for former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in the treason case.

"Yes, this information is true," Herasko told Ukrinform.

As reported, on July 6, 2017, Yanukovych said in a video address that he had withdrawn his lawyers from court proceedings against him.

On July 7, the Regional Center for the Provision of Free Secondary Legal Aid in Kyiv selected Vitaliy Meshechek as a state lawyer to defend Yanukovych.

On August 17, Meshechek recused himself as Yanukovych's lawyer. He said that the criminal proceedings were complicated and that he could not perform his duties properly.

The court upheld Meshechek's refusal to defend Yanukovych in the treason case.
