Presidential Administration: Poroshenko signs decree on stripping Saakashvili of Ukrainian citizenship

The Administration of the President of Ukraine has confirmed that the Head of State has signed the decree on stripping Mikheil Saakashvili of Ukrainian citizenship.

Ukrinform learnt this from the Presidential Administration.

"Upon submission of the State Migration Service which provided convincing facts about filing false information when submitting the application, the Citizenship Commission under the President of Ukraine decided to support the motion for terminating Ukrainian citizenship of Mikheil Saakashvili and recommended the President to take an appropriate decision. The Head of State signed the decree on the grounds of these recommendations," an interlocutor of the agency noted.

The Administration added that in accordance with the legislation on the protection of personal data, the relevant normative act was not subject to publication since it contained confidential information, particularly personal data.

As reported, Saakashvili received Ukrainian citizenship pursuant to the decree of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in late May 2015. Saakashvili headed the Odesa Regional State Administration for a year and a half – from May 30, 2015 to November 9, 2016 – and then announced his resignation.
