President Poroshenko: We have to seek peace with Russia through strength, not appeasement

The Russian side is not interested in reaching peace in eastern Ukraine, it wants to exert control. Therefore, Ukraine has no other way round but to seek peace through strength, not appeasement.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said this while delivering the speech at the Royal Institute of International Affairs Chatham House in London, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"We don't have peace for one reason: Russians are not interested in reaching peace. They are interested in exerting control,” the President said.

Poroshenko noted that he had felt it during the telephone conversation in the “Normandy format” with Chancellor Merkel, President Holland and President Putin last Monday.

"It was another display of Moscow’s empty promises. It was another display of their attitude: ‘if you want peace, you can have it: but only on our conditions.’ No compromises. Just – the rule of force. It proves that we have no other way round but to seek peace through strength, not appeasement,” the President of Ukraine stressed.
