Ukraine calls on UN to review approaches to peacekeeping operations

UN peacekeeping operations, which are ongoing now on different continents, require the review of efficiency and provision of the reasonable approach to their activities.

Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko stated this on Thursday during the UN Security Council meeting on peacekeeping operations, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"The UN peacekeeping missions are now trying to solve the problems of the XXI century with the obsolete instruments of the XX century," the Ukrainian representative emphasized.

According to Yelchenko, it is high time to move to effective and simultaneously economical forms of conducting peacekeeping operations.

In this regard, he stressed that Ukraine fully agreed with the need for structural reforms and the thorough review of the mandates of each mission, as well as the control over their effectiveness, "focusing on protecting the civilian population and reaching a political solution."
