Berlin: Russian recognition of DPR/LPR documents contradicts international law

Official Berlin considers that a decision of Russian President Putin to recognize so-called passports of "DPR" and "LPR" contradicts the international law and the Minsk agreements.

Representatives of the Federal Government said this on Monday in Berlin commenting on the decree of the Russian president, an Ukrinform correspondent reported from Germany.

"The recognition of travel documents issued by self-declared Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics undermines the unity of Ukraine and is a stark contradiction to all that was agreed in Minsk and is therefore totally unacceptable," Steffen Seibert said during a regular government news conference in Berlin.

As a reminder, last Saturday Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree "On the recognition in the Russian Federation of documents and vehicle registration numbers, issued to the Ukrainian citizens and non-citizens permanently residing in the separate districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine." The decision aims to protect the human rights and civic freedoms in accordance with the generally accepted principles of international humanitarian law.
