Swedish Foreign Minister: Sanctions against Russia should remain in place

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has met with Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström in Kyiv.

This is reported by the press service of the Head of State.

"The Head of State and the Foreign Minister discussed the steps to speed up the implementation of the agreements following the visit of the President of Ukraine to the Kingdom of Sweden on November 14, including further support of the Swedish partners for the modernization of Ukraine," the statement reads.

The parties also coordinated the positions on the eve of the European Council meeting, scheduled for December 15-16, including on the introduction of a visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens, completion of the ratification process regarding the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, and continuation of sanctions against Russia. The Swedish Foreign Minister stressed that sanctions should remain in place.

Poroshenko informed Margot Wallström about deterioration of the security situation in Donbas and flagrant violations of human rights in the temporarily occupied Crimea. The President once again thanked the Swedish government for its unwavering stance on the need to preserve sanctions against Russia until the full restoration of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
