Roman Sushchenko’s arrest: Ukraine expects support from CoE Human Rights Commissioner – Klimkin

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe Nils Muiznieks held a meeting in Strasburg to discuss the protection of rights of Ukrainians illegally kept in Russia, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s press service reports.

“The Ukrainian foreign minister during the conversation drew particular attention of the Council of Europe commissioner for human rights to abuses in Russia. The minister stressed that Ukraine expects support and certain steps from the commissioner in protecting the rights and helping free Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko and all other Ukrainian citizens who became political prisoners in the Russian Federation,” reads the report.

The Ukrainian foreign minister also noted the need to monitor the observance of human rights in Russia-occupied Crimea, in particular, he informed the commissioner about illegal actions of the Russian occupation authorities against Ilmi Umerov.
