EU extends sanctions against Russia for six months

The European Union has extended the economic sanctions against Russia until the end of January 2017 in response to its aggression against Ukraine.

The EU Council adopted the appropriate legal solution on Friday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported from Brussels.

"On July 1, the EU Council extended the economic sanctions that related to certain sectors of the Russian economy until January 31, 2017," the European Union said.

The EU Council noted that the decision to extend the sanctions for the next six months was based on the analysis of the implementation of the Minsk agreements by Russia.

The sanctions determine restrictions on cooperation with Russia in the banking and finance fields, as well as energy, defense sector and export of dual use goods.
