President creates council on protection of freedom of speech

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree “on the council on protection of professional activities of journalists and freedom of speech,” the president’s press service reports.

“The Council was established to ensure the realization of the constitutional right to free speech, to establish the efficient procedure of interaction between state bodies and institutions of civil society, in particular, the mass media, regarding the prevention of obstruction of lawful professional activities of journalists,” reads a report.

According to the approved regulations, the council is an advisory body under the President of Ukraine. Among its main tasks are the monitoring of the situation (the state) of ensuring the protection of professional activities of journalists and freedom of speech in Ukraine and drafting proposals on the top priority measures in terms of protection of professional activities of journalists and the freedom of speech in line with the European democratic standards, etc.
