Reforms are in hands of Ukrainians - Steinmeier, Ayrault

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault intend to gain insight into the current political situation in Ukraine and to express their support for the reforms during their upcoming visit to Kyiv.

They said this during a joint press conference in Berlin Airport before leaving for Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent in Germany reports.

"We want to help Ukraine," Steinmeier said. "Yes, we will support Ukraine and at the same time demand the implementation of the reforms and of the Minsk Agreements. It is our joint message, which we are bringing to Kyiv," Ayrault added.

The diplomat expressed concern about "the turbulence in Ukrainian domestic policy" over the last days.

"We need to convince Ukrainians that the reforms are only in their hands," Ayrault said. The faster the reforms will be implemented, the sooner confidence in the country will be restored, he said. “The European partners demand higher activity in the fight against corruption, building the transparent and rule-of-law society.”

The situation in the domestic policy has an impact on the progress of the Minsk peace process as well, the diplomats noted.
