European Commission has no concerns over gas transit to EU through Ukraine

The European Commission is satisfied with the fulfilment of transit obligations on suppling Russian gas to Ukraine.

European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Canete said on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent in Brussels reports.

“I would like to state: the European Commission at present has no particular concerns over gas supplies from Russia to Ukraine. The volume of gas in Ukrainian gas storages is higher than a year ago,” the European Commissioner said.

He also stressed that a so-called “winter” protocol, concluded in September between Ukraine, the European Commission and Russia on gas supplies, is being implemented in full.

“The gas flow through Ukraine to other European countries is absolutely transparent, and Ukrainians have no problems. Ukraine is a reliable transit route. That’s why the European Commission states that we want gas to flow through Ukraine,” Canete said.

He also noted that Ukraine provides reliable transit of gas.

As Ukrinform earlier reported, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk stated yesterday that Ukraine stopped purchasing Russian gas, as the country had the best price offers on the EU market.
