Firefighting efforts continue in Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, radiation levels normal across Ukraine – State Emergency Service

The radiation situation across Ukraine, including the northern part of the Kyiv region, remained stable as of 11:00 on May 8, with firefighting efforts ongoing in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service announced this on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.

According to data from the SES National Hydrometeorological Service, gamma radiation levels remain within normal limits throughout the country.

"In the event of conflicting information appearing in the public space, we urge people to rely exclusively on official sources," the post said.

Efforts to extinguish the large-scale fire in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone are ongoing.

The SES said it will continue to promptly update the public on the radiation situation in the country.

Earlier reports said that emergency crews were continuing efforts to contain a large-scale forest fire covering more than 1,100 hectares in the exclusion zone in the Kyiv region. Strong winds are causing the fire to spread rapidly.
