Amber miners damage over seven thousand hectares in three Ukrainian regions

Amber miners have damaged more than 7,000 hectares of land in three Ukrainian regions: over 6,200 hectares of forest land and more than 1,000 hectares of agricultural land.

"... Let alone the disastrous environmental consequences caused by the barbaric method of open amber mining. At a rough estimate, miners have damaged more than 6,200 hectares of forest land and more than 1,000 hectares of agricultural land in three regions," Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Serhiy Knyazev said during a meeting dedicated to the illegal amber mining in Zhytomyr region chaired by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

He noted that "the actual absence of a mechanism for carrying out environmental and restoration works may lead under such conditions to the need to recognize the northern part of Ukraine as a zone of ecological disaster."
