Wrecked Ivolga boat being lifted – Zubko

On the scene of the Ivolga boat crash, a floating crane has begun lifting the boat, according to Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Utilities Economy Minister Henadiy Zubko, who is in charge of a special commission investigating causes of the tragedy.

“The floating crane is conducting works on lifting the Ivolga boat,” he  wrote on Twitter.

According to Zubko, the governmental commission took such a decision, not waiting for an official permission of the boat’s captain,

“We are fulfilling everything to complete the investigation as soon as possible,” he added.

On October 17, near Zatoka (Odesa region) about 350-400 m from shore, the Ivolga boat sank, with 33 passengers and three crew members on board. As a result of the wreck, 14 people were killed. Another 22 people were saved, 18 of whom were hospitalized.

The ship captain – a son of its owner – was rescued and detained immediately after the tragedy. The prosecutor’s office announced him on suspicion.
