Local elections in Ukraine were held democratically - CVU

The voting day in Ukraine's local elections on October 25 generally met democratic standards for fair elections, Chairman of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine (CVU) Oleksiy Koshel has said.

He said this at a briefing on Monday, October 26, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Our general conclusion is that in the opinion of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine, the day of voting in local elections generally met democratic standards for fair and democratic elections. In the vast majority of cases, violations of current legislation did not significantly affect the results," Koshel said.

However, according to him, the CVU recorded a number of violations of the election law in the local elections.

"A number of reports from our observers regarding violations of election law give us grounds to say that bribery, direct and indirect bribery were used on election day, that there were some attempts to rig the voting results. There were also schemes related to 'election tourists,' and in some communities it could have a significant impact on the results of expression of will," Koshel said.
