EU extends sanctions against Russia for another six months

The European Council has extended the individual sanctions imposed over actions undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity for a further six months, until September 15, 2026.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported on the European Council’s website.

“The Council decided today to prolong the restrictive measures targeting those responsible for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine for another six months, until 15 September 2026,” the statement reads.

The individual restrictive measures will continue to apply to around 2,600 individuals and entities involved in Russia’s ongoing unjustified and unprovoked military aggression against Ukraine. The current measures include travel bans on individuals, freezing asset, and a ban on making funds or other economic resources available to the listed individuals and entities.

At the same time, the European Council decided not to renew the listing of two individuals and to remove five deceased persons from the sanctions list.

Following February 24, 2022, in response to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, the European Union significantly expanded sanctions against Russia in order to weaken its economic base, deprive it of critical technologies and markets, and limit its ability to wage war.

As stated in the text supported by 25 Heads of State or Government at the European Council meeting on December 18, 2025, the EU reaffirmed its steadfast and unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

“The EU remains determined to maintain and increase pressure on Russia to stop its brutal war of aggression and engage in meaningful negotiations towards peace,” the statement said.

As reported earlier, ambassadors of EU member states meeting in the COREPER II format have been working on extending the individual sanctions against Russia.
