Von der Leyen meets Fico in Paris, discusses energy prices
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen held a meeting in Paris with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, during which the sides discussed the affordability of energy prices.
According to Ukrinform, she stated this on the social network X.
"I met Prime Minister Robert Fico in Paris today. We discussed the need for affordable energy prices for Europeans while maintaining secure supplies for Slovakia and the EU. Our energy independence is at stake. This will also be a central topic at our upcoming EUCO Summit," von der Leyen noted.
According to her, during the meeting they also discussed the NextGenEU financial program that supports EU member states and the necessary steps, particularly in the field of justice, "for Slovakia to benefit from these investments to the fullest."
No other details of the meeting were reported.
As Ukrinform previously reported, earlier Fico requested a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss the situation surrounding the shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline.
President Volodymyr Zelensky invited the Slovak prime minister to Ukraine to discuss all issues related to the Druzhba pipeline.
Fico had stated that he was ready to meet with the President of Ukraine regarding oil transit but suggested doing so in the territory of a third country.
On January 27, Russian forces struck energy infrastructure in the Lviv region. As a result of the damage caused, the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba oil pipeline stopped.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, following a phone conversation with Fico on February 27, said that their countries would create an investigative commission to assess the condition of the Druzhba pipeline.
