Ukraine to import U.S. LNG via Klaipeda terminal for first time
Naftogaz Group is importing U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) into Ukraine for the first time through the terminal in the Lithuanian port of Klaipėda.
According to Ukrinform, this was announced by Naftogaz CEO Sergii Koretskyi on Facebook.
“As part of our partnership with the Lithuanian state-owned energy holding Ignitis Group Group, we secured the supply of 90 million cubic meters of LNG from the United States. Naftogaz will independently deliver the gas to Ukraine during February–March,” Koretskyi wrote.
He emphasized that diversifying supply routes is essential to ensure reliability and uninterrupted gas deliveries to consumers, particularly amid ongoing Russian attacks on gas and energy infrastructure.
First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal added that Ukraine is also working on developing other regional supply routes, including the Vertical Gas Corridor. “Together with our partners, we are building a new energy security architecture for Europe, where there will be no place for Russian gas, and Ukraine will become one of the region’s energy hubs,” he commented.
Earlier this month, Naftogaz also began importing LNG through a terminal in Germany. The contracted U.S. LNG is delivered via the Deutsche ReGas terminal in the Baltic Sea and then transported to Ukraine through Poland’s gas transmission system.
