Chornobyl NPP loses power supply, power lines of other nuclear plants damaged – IAEA
Several Ukrainian electrical substations that are critical to ensuring nuclear safety were damaged in Russian strikes this morning, and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant has completely lost external power supply.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said this in a post on X, Ukrinform reports.
"Several Ukrainian electrical substations vital for nuclear safety were affected by widespread military activity this morning, Director General Rafael Grossi said. Chornobyl NPP lost all off-site power and power lines to other NPPs were also impacted," the statement said.
According to Grossi, the IAEA "is actively following developments in order to assess impact on nuclear safety."
Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal informed Grossi on January 19 about Russia's preparations for another massive attack on energy infrastructure, with possible strikes on facilities and networks servicing nuclear power plants.
