Galushchenko meets with IEA executive director

Ukraine’s Minister of Energy German Galushchenko and Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol have discussed strengthening energy security on the European continent.

According to Ukrinform, the press service of the Ministry of Energy published a relevant report on its website.

"The main topic of the meeting was strengthening energy security on the European continent in view of the crisis in the gas market provoked by Russia," the report reads.

Galushchenko informed the IEA executive director that following the synchronization with ENTSO-E, the Ukrainian power grid demonstrates its stability, despite more than 200 days of operation in war conditions. He emphasized Ukraine's readiness to help European partners get through the upcoming difficult autumn-winter period, using opportunities to export Ukrainian electricity. Its full use will allow EU states to replace 5-6 billion cubic meters of Russian gas, the minister said.

Galushchenko also emphasized that European countries can use one of the largest Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities on the continent on favorable terms.

Fatih Birol, in turn, stressed that Ukraine plays an important role in ensuring energy security in Europe and beyond.

He noted that the IEA continues to strengthen relations with Ukraine to support its recovery needs and help build a new post-war energy future.

As reported, in July 2022, Ukraine joined the International Energy Agency as an associate member. The IEA community provides about 75% of the world's energy demand and covers more than 5 billion consumers.
