Maasikas: Ukraine needs to de-oligarchize electricity market

Ukraine has widely implemented EU requirements in the gas area but much remains to be done to secure the electricity market, including its de-oligarchization.

"Ukraine has widely implemented EU requirements in the energy sector, in the gas sector, and the benefits are obvious. As for the electricity market, it is still far from implementing EU standards, and this also means that the synchronization of Ukrainian and European grids is still remote," Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Matti Maasikas said at the 4th Association Exchange Forum in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to him, this synchronization remains technically possible in the future, but a functioning electricity market, real regulation, de-oligarchization of the electricity market, etc. are needed.

As Maasikas pointed out, the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement and FTA yield tangible results for both parties, and Ukraine also can use it as a preliminary plan for implementing reforms.
