Ukraine keeps tenth place in world pig iron production

In January-May 2021, Ukraine produced 8.90 million tonnes of pig iron, taking the tenth place in the world ranking of pig iron producers, Ukrinform reports with reference to the Ukrmetalurgprom Association.

According to Worldsteel, 613.53 million tonnes of pig iron was produced in January-May 2021, which is 8.0% more than in the same period last year.

China remains the world's largest pig iron producer, steelmakers of which in January-May 2021 produced 379.90 million tonnes (up 5.4% from January-May 2020). The share of Chinese pig iron in world production was 61.9%.

The top five pig iron producing countries in January-May 2021 also included India (48.73 million tonnes; up 29.7%), Japan (29.40 million tonnes; up 6.0%), Russia (25.84 million tonnes; up 1.5%), and South Korea (19.22 million tonnes; up 6.8%).

Ukraine remained 10th among 38 world iron producers in January-May 2021 (8.90 million tonnes; up 9.1%).

World steel production in January-May 2021 amounted to 837.47 million tonnes, which was 14.5% more than in January-May 2020.

The top five steel producing countries were China (473.10 million tonnes, up 13.9%), India (48.61 million tonnes; up 33.6%), Japan (39.95 million tonnes; up 9.1%), the United States (34.77 million tonnes, up 10.6%), and Russia (31.87 million tonnes; up 7.9%). Ukraine was 13th among 64 world steel producers in January-May 2021 (8.99 million tonnes; up 8.4%).

As Ukrinform reported, Ukraine took the ninth place in the ranking of world's largest pig iron producers and eleventh place in the ranking of world's largest steel producers in 2020, according to the World Steel Association.
