PM: Ukrainian GTS ready to transport over 140 bln cu m of gas a year

If Nord Stream 2 is launched, it will cause a drop of several billion euros in Ukraine’s annual income, violate the EU's energy security and create economic preconditions for continued financing of the Russian government's aggressive actions against Ukraine.

"Kyiv's position remains unchanged: first of all, it is a political project that was not commercially viable from the very beginning. The Ukrainian GTS is ready to transport more than 140 billion cubic meters of gas a year. In 2020, 55.8 billion cubic meters of Russian gas was transported to Europe via it. It is the shortest gas transit route to Europe. Consequently, it is the cheapest transit price. Moreover, Ukraine has always been a reliable transit country. The launch of Nord Stream 2, if it comes to that, will cause a drop of several billion euros in Ukraine’s annual income. Furthermore, it will primarily violate the EU's energy security and create economic preconditions for continued financing of Russian government's aggressive actions against Ukraine," Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said in an interview with the Bild German newspaper, the Government portal reports.

He stressed that Ukraine supported the sanctions policy against the launch of the gas pipeline.

As reported, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said during the 4th German-Ukrainian Economic Forum that sanctions policy and prospects for the development of Ukrainian-German green energy cooperation are not linked, commenting on the information about Germany's alleged readiness to invest more in Ukraine in exchange for the U.S. waiver of sanctions against Nord Stream 2.
