PM: Increasing gas production is Ukraine's strategic goal for next five years

Increasing gas production to fully meet the domestic needs of the state is a strategic goal of Ukraine for the next five years.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said this during a public discussion of the draft National Economic Strategy until 2030 entitled "Energy Sector Development, Mining and Effective Environmental Protection" on February 4, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Our own gas production is national security… Ensuring our own production in the next five years, increasing it to a level that meets the internal needs of our state, is also a strategic goal," Shmyhal said.

He also recalled that the government had signed production sharing agreements in eight oil and gas fields in Ukraine, which is one of the steps towards achieving the strategic goal of increasing gas production.

As Ukrinform reported, on December 31, 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers signed production sharing agreements with winning bidders for seven oil and gas fields. One more agreement was signed on January 13.

On February 4, Naftogaz Group announced the beginning of the implementation of the Resource Base Development Strategy, which envisages doubling of hydrocarbon production during the next ten years.
