Monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions begins in Ukraine

On January 1, 2021, the Law of Ukraine "On Principles of Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of Greenhouse Gas Emissions" came into force.

The implementation of a monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) framework will allow Ukraine to introduce a greenhouse gas emission allowance trading system, the State Environmental Inspectorate reported.

“The current law actually creates the basis for a monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system of greenhouse gas emissions. Such a system will allow Ukraine to receive accurate information on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from production facilities; ensure control over emissions, be able to limit them; and introduce a mandatory methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emissions for all facilities from which these emissions come,” Head of the State Environmental Inspectorate Andriy Maliovany explained.

According to him, the adoption of this document is an important precondition for the implementation of measures to combat climate change, based on the EU experience.

As Ukrinform reported, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law "On Principles of Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of Greenhouse Gas Emissions" on December 12, 2020.
