Ukraine withdraws from a number of CIS energy agreements

The Government of Ukraine has adopted a resolution "On withdrawal from certain international treaties concluded within the Commonwealth of Independent States."

As the press service of the Ministry of Energy reports, this decision will make it possible to bring the contractual framework within the CIS in line with actual international relations in the field of energy.

In particular, Ukraine withdraws from the Mining Charter of the Commonwealth of Independent States of March 27, 1997; Agreement on the coordination of the interstate relations in the field of power industry of the Commonwealth of Independent States of February 14, 1992; and Agreement on the use of atomic [nuclear] energy in the peace purposes of May 31, 2013.

In addition, Ukraine will withdraw from the Agreement on the basic principles of cooperation in the field of peaceful use of atomic [nuclear] energy of June 26, 1992, and the protocol as amended of May 31, 2013.

“Given the political component of the CIS activities, the Ministry has not participated in the meetings of the CIS Electric Power Council and other events within this organization since March 2014. Cooperation in nuclear energy and electricity within the CIS is not carried out as well,” the statement reads.

"The research revealed that the above-mentioned agreements with the CIS do not correspond to the actual state of international relations in the energy field and have lost their practical significance," the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine stated.
