World Bank supports NBU governor in his commitment to maintain central bank’s independence

The World Bank supports commitments of the new Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Kyrylo Shevchenko to maintain the central bank’s independence, as well as to enhance supervision and regulation policies, Anna Bierde, the Vice President of the World Bank for Europe and Central Asia has said.

"It was a pleasure to speak today with the new Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Kyrylo Shevchenko. I was encouraged to hear his commitment to maintaining the NBU’s independent and technically sound policies, including continuing with strengthening bank supervision and regulation. The policies pursued by the NBU so far have served Ukraine well and it would be important to continue them,” said Anna Bierde, the World Bank for Europe and Central Asia posted on Facebook.

She noted that these NBU policies would be very important for Ukraine so it can successfully manage the economic impacts caused by the global pandemic and set the stage for eventual recovery.

“We look forward to working closely with the new Governor,” reads the report.

As reported by Ukrinform, on July 16, 2020, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appointed Kyrylo Shevchenko to the post of NBU governor on the proposal of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
