Shmyhal assures Dombrovskis that NBU’s independence remains a priority

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal has assured Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis that the independence of the National Bank remains a priority for the government.

“Grateful for trusting conversation with Valdis Dombrovskis. It’s truly important to understand that Ukraine has a strong and reliable friend in the EU. Ensured him that the independence of the National Bank of Ukraine remains our unconditional priority,” Shmyhal wrote on his Twitter account.

On July 3, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine dismissed Yakiv Smolii from the post of the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.

Earlier, the EU called Smolii’s resignation a worrying signal and emphasized that the Bank must maintain the ability to fulfill its role independently.
