Vienna gas talks: Ukraine comments on agreement with Russia

At bilateral negotiations between Ukraine's Naftogaz and Russia's Gazprom in Vienna, the parties agreed to continue work on options for the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine.

Executive Director of Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko said this in a post on his Facebook page on December 13.

"A meeting with Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller is over. We agreed to continue to work on further transit options," he wrote.

According to Vitrenko, it is too early to talk about an agreed option, but the Ukrainian side takes the most constructive position. "Active work continues," he added.

On December 13, bilateral negotiations between Naftogaz and Gazprom on gas transit took place in Vienna (Austria). Ukraine was represented by Executive Director of Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko and Director of LLC Operator of the Gas Transportation System of Ukraine Serhiy Makohon.

As Ukrinform reported, Vitrenko told journalists on December 9 that in Paris, as part of the Normandy Four summit, Ukraine and Russia had not agreed on a new contract on January 1, 2020 on the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine.

The current gas transit contract between Naftogaz and Gazprom expires on December 31, 2019. The parties are currently in talks to sign a new contract.
