Zelensky signs law on strengthening Ukraine's border security

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law introducing amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine on engineering infrastructure and maintenance of the state border, the press service of the head of state has reported.

"This law introduces amendments to the Land Code of Ukraine, the Water Code of Ukraine, the law on the state border of Ukraine, according to which the State Border Guard Service bodies are granted permanent use of land plots 30-50 meters wide along the state border for the construction and maintenance of engineering facilities, fences, border signs, clearcuts, supply lines, and other border infrastructure facilities," the report reads.

The document also exempts the border authorities from the reimbursement of losses of agricultural and forestry production due to the engineering infrastructure of the state border.

It notes that the law will help create proper conditions for the engineering infrastructure of the state border of Ukraine with neighboring states, first and foremost, with Russia in order to ensure the implementation of the tasks of the State Border Guard Service on guarding and protecting the state border.

The law will come into force on January 1, 2020.

On October 29, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law introducing amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine on engineering infrastructure and maintenance of the state border (No. 0905).
