Infrastructure minister Omelyan suggests building new airport in Zakarpattia region

The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine considers the opening of the Uzhgorod Airport only a temporary solution to the problem of air traffic and plans to build a new airport in Zakarpattia region.

Infrastructure Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelyan said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

"The opening of the airport in Uzhgorod is a temporary solution. For us, the key will be the construction of a new airport either in Mukachevo (most likely) or in another city, but this requires investment," he said.

Omelyan added that construction of a new airport in Zakarpattia region will require UAH 2-3 billion in budget funds.

"We always emphasize that Zakarpattia region cannot be a territory cut off from Ukraine. It should have a full-fledged road, rail and aviation connection. We reached this goal and opened the airport [Uzhgorod Airport]. Now, its high-quality operation should be ensured," Omelyan said.

As reported, on March 15, 2019, the Uzhgorod Airport resumed operation of regular flights that were not performed there since the summer of 2016.
