NBU purchases $900 mln in interbank market this year

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) purchased almost $900 million in the interbank foreign exchange market in January-April 2019, the central bank’s press service reports.

“The net purchase of foreign currency by the National Bank in the interbank foreign exchange market amounted to about USD 900 million in January-April 2019. At the same time, the official hryvnia exchange rate has been strengthened by 4% since the beginning of the year,” reads the report.

As Ukrinform reported, in 2018, the supply of foreign currency in the interbank market exceeded its demand. In particular, the supply of foreign currency from banks was affected by net sales of foreign currency by the households. Thus, the NBU was able to make a net purchase of foreign currency worth $1.4 billion without affecting the hryvnia exchange rate.
