NBU: Cash in circulation outside banks amounts to over UAH 400 bln

As of January 1, 2019, the amount of cash in circulation outside banks in Ukraine totaled UAH 400.1 billion, which is 10.7% more compared to the beginning of 2018.

The press service of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) wrote this on its official Facebook page.

"As of January 1, 2019, cash totaling UAH 400.1 billion was in circulation: coins – UAH 2.2 billion (13.1 billion pieces), banknotes – UAH 397.8 billion (2.95 billion pieces),” reads the statement.

The increase in demand for cash was due to the need of Ukraine’s growing economy for the means of payment. At the same time, the development of non-cash payments has slightly held back the demand for cash. Due to this, the level of cash in the economy (the ratio of cash in circulation outside banks (M0) to GDP) decreased from 11.1% of GDP in 2017 to 10.3% of GDP in 2018 (according to the NBU estimates).

The average number of banknotes per one Ukrainian was 69 pieces, and coins - 293 pieces (as of January 1, 2018 - banknotes notes and 293 coins, respectively).  The 200-hryvnia banknotes and the 10-kopeck coins were most common in circulation (22.8% and 29.1%, respectively).
