Ukraine should modernize its GTS – Steffen Seibert

Ukraine should modernize its gas transportation system (GTS) in order to create conditions for long-term gas transit.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said this at a briefing on Monday, Ukrinform's correspondent in Germany reports.

"Ukraine should reform its gas transportation system to create conditions for long-term gas transit," Seibert said.

He did not disclose details of the conversation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel with Russian President Vlamidir Putin at the German government’s Meseberg Castle on August 18, saying that it was "trust-based." At the same time, the government spokesman recalled that the position of Berlin remained unchanged - Ukraine should remain a gas transit country after the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which Germany considered as an "economic project".

As reported, PJSC Ukrtransgaz and NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine developed a plan for the modernization of the Ukrainian GTS until 2027. The purpose of this plan is to bring production capacities in line with European standards.
