Whole world will feel the effect of Nord Stream 2 construction – Naftogaz’s supervisory board head

The mere fact of the existence of Nord Stream-2 can destabilize peace and security in Europe, but the rest of the world will also feel the consequences.

The press service of NJSC Naftogaz Ukrainy reported this with reference to the chairperson of Naftogaz’s Supervisory Board, Clare Spottiswoode.

"I believe that the mere fact of the existence of Nord Stream-2 can destabilize peace and security in Europe. Without a doubt, the rest of the world will also feel the consequences. Nord Stream-2 is built with only one goal - to consolidate Gazprom's influence and to cut off Ukraine. Russia's great geopolitical interest in Nord Stream-2 is obvious," she said.

Spottiswoode also noted that the Russian project would duplicate the existing facilities, transporting gas to the same buyers but on longer route.

"This is not an economic effect, it is exclusively a political effect," the chairperson of Naftogaz’s Supervisory Board added.

As known, Nord Stream 2 is a project on the construction of a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, bypassing Ukraine across the Baltic Sea. Gazprom owns 51% of shares. Russia wants to build two lines of the gas pipeline (up to 55 billion cubic meters a year). The Baltic States, Poland, Ukraine, as well as the United States, actively oppose the project. In particular, on April 5, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine called on the world not to support the construction of Russia’s Nord Stream-2.
