Introduction of state supervision of local self-government to promote decentralization - Zubko

Ukraine needs to introduce state supervision over observance of laws and the Constitution of Ukraine by the local government bodies, and the adoption of the relevant law will help implement faster the decentralization reform.

Vice Prime Minister – Minister for Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Utilities Hennadiy Zubko said this at a consultative meeting on the legislative regulation of compliance with the law in the activities of local governments, the press service of the Regional Development Ministry reported.

"Today, in Ukraine, there is a need to introduce state supervision over observance of laws and the Constitution of Ukraine by the local self-government authorities. It's about supervision, not control. It means not the restriction of independence in making decisions on social and economic issues, but ensuring the interests and safety of citizens. The development and adoption of the necessary law in this sector will make it possible to move faster on the implementation of the decentralization reform," Zubko said.

The consultative meeting was held with the participation of representatives of the Council of Europe, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on State Building, local self-government, heads of relevant local government associations, experts and international partners, in particular ULEAD with Europe.
