Verkhovna Rada speaker urges US to help modernize Ukrainian GTS

Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy has urged the American side to assist in modernization of the Ukrainian gas transportation system in the context of strengthening the energy security of Europe.

Parubiy said this at a briefing in Washington upon the meetings with the leadership of the United States, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"When we discussed [in Washington] energy cooperation and prevention of Nord Stream 2, one of the talking points was the Ukrainian gas transportation system and its modernization. I expressed the opinion that it would be important for both Ukraine and the United States, if powerful American energy companies took part in the modernization of the Ukrainian GTS," the chairman of the Ukrainian parliament said.

Parubiy also informed that Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan called this stance "important" and promised to discuss it with the relevant secretary and the management of the companies that showed interest in joint projects with Ukraine and investments in the Ukrainian economy.
