EU formally extends sanctions against Russia

The European Union has formally adopted a legal decision to extend sectoral economic restrictive measures against Russia.

The decision was made by the Council of the EU on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported from Brussels.

The extended sanctions will come into force on February 1, 2018 and will be in force for the next six months.

The sanctions include prohibitions and restrictions on cooperation with Russia in the areas of finance, defense and energy.

The EU imposed restrictive measures against the Russian Federation in 2014 in response to Russia’s encroachment on the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
