Government approves waste management strategy until 2030

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the National Waste Management Strategy until 2030.

The relevant decision was made at a government meeting on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Ostap Semerak, about 36 billion tonnes of waste have been already accumulated in Ukraine.

"Every year in Ukraine about 10 tonnes of waste is generated per one inhabitant in our country against 5 tonnes generated in the EU countries," the minister stressed and added that only 30% of industrial waste and 4% of household waste are recycled.

Semerak also noted that the approved strategy is "the first non-segmental document over the years of Ukraine's independence"; it was put up for a public discussion, and agreed with experts, parliamentary committees, business representatives.
