Ukraine not using fipronil in poultry farming - food safety service

Fipronil is not used in Ukraine as a medicine for the destruction of external parasites in poultry farming, the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection has told Ukrinform.

"Fipronil is not used in Ukraine as a medicine for the destruction of external parasites in the poultry industry. The State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection has received no complaints regarding the illegal use of fipronil by Ukrainian poultry farms," the report says.

According to the service, veterinary medicines containing fipronil are used in Ukraine only for the treatment of cats and dogs. In 2017, Ukraine did not export eggs from the European Union, reads the report.

Fifteen EU countries, as well as Hong Kong and Switzerland, said earlier that they had received eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil.

The insecticide can damage people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands. The substance used to kill lice and ticks on animals is banned by the EU for use in the food industry.
