Ukraine to launch freight train to Iran

Ukraine and Iran have agreed to launch a freight train that will transport agriculture products between the countries, particularly grain crops, the Ukrainian Infrastructure Ministry’s press service reports.

According to Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelian, the route will pass through the territory of Georgia and Azerbaijan.

“This is an extremely promising direction of cooperation for the both countries. Ukraine should develop new international transport corridors in order to become a reliable transit bridge between the countries of Europe, Asia and the East,” said the minister.

He also noted that the test train on the Ukraine-Iran route could be launched as early as in the summer of 2017.

Volodymyr Omelian also called on the Iranian side to consider the possibility of transporting the Iranian oil to Ukraine, as well as prospects of building an oil refinery in Ukraine.
