European Parliament calls for new sanctions against Russia because of escalation in Avdiyivka

The European Parliament has stressed the need to prepare new sanctions against Russia because of aggravation of the situation in Donbas and failure of the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Guy Verhofstadt, the leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group in the European Parliament, has stated this on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported from Brussels.

"The EU should maintain the existing sanctions and prepare new ones if Russia continues to ignore the international law," the leader said due to the escalation of the situation in Donbas.

He called on the EU leaders to take concrete steps in order to return "Minsk" to the process of political settlement.

Verhofstadt noted that "new military aggression that was launched by the so-called separatists, who are supported by Russia" must be stopped by the Russian side.
