EBRD President: Construction of Chornobyl NPP’s confinement financed by 40 countries

The fund for construction of the New Safety Confinement of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) has been functioning since 1997. Forty world countries have made contributions to the construction during this time.

President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Suma Chakrabarti said this at the ceremony of completing the coverage of the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chornobyl NPP, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"The EBRD is very proud of completion of this historic project. We became the Chernobyl fund managers in 1997. The project implementation has become possible due to great work and dedication of many people from more than 30 countries. More than 40 governments of world countries have made contributions to the Chornobyl fund, having provided about $7 billion for the project," Chakrabarti said.

He recalled that the New Safe Confinement would be commissioned within the next year.
