Ukraine, EU officially become strategic partners in field of energy

Ukraine and the EU have deepened the level of partnership in the energy sector.

This is stipulated in the Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Energy Partnership between Ukraine and the European Union, which was signed at the EU-Ukraine summit in Brussels today, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The document was signed by Energy and Coal Industry Minister of Ukraine Ihor Nasalyk and Vice-President of the European Commission for the Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič.

The renewed partnership will include consideration of issues related to the importance of Ukraine as a transit country, as well as the issues of reforming the energy market in Ukraine, renewal of the gas network, establishment of appropriate legal and regulatory framework in the energy market sector and energy efficiency in Ukraine as means of reducing dependence on energy imports.

The purpose of the memorandum is the full integration of the energy markets of Ukraine and the EU in the interests of consumers and the need for mutual reinforcement of security of supply and environmental protection in the energy sector.
