Westinghouse fuel to be loaded at three nuclear units next year – Demchyshyn

The second and third units of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant and the fifth unit of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant will start using fuel of the U.S. production in the following year.

Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said at a briefing on Monday, November 9, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“I would like to remind about two projects of Energoatom on the loading of Westinghouse fuel.  It has been already loaded at the third unit, and we are launching a project on the loading at the fifth unit. Later, the Westinghouse fuel will be loaded at the second unit of the South Ukraine NPP,” Demchyshyn said.

Thus, he stated that the Westinghouse fuel will be loaded at three nuclear units.

“This will enable us to diversify deliveries, and most important, by using various fuel from various suppliers, to form market competition,” Demchyshyn said.

As a reminder, earlier all deliveries of nuclear fuel was carried out by the Russian Company TVEL.
