SMM recorded 836 ceasefire violations in eastern Ukraine over past weekend

The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) recorded 601 ceasefire violations in Donetsk region and 235 in Luhansk region between the evenings of 21 and 23 May, according to an OSCE SMM report.

“In Donetsk region, between the evenings of 21 and 23 May, the SMM recorded 601 ceasefire violations, including 323 explosions (three impacts, 29 airbursts, 76 outgoing and 215 undetermined),” the report reads.

The majority of ceasefire violations occurred at south-westerly and northwesterly direction of Horlivka (non-government-controlled, 39km north-east of Donetsk), at south-easterly direction of non-government-controlled Donetsk city and at north-easterly and south-easterly directions of Hranitne (government-controlled, 60km south of Donetsk).

In Luhansk region, between the evenings of 21 and 23 May, the SMM recorded 235 ceasefire violations, including 154 explosions (two impacts and 152 undetermined).

The majority of ceasefire violations occurred at westerly direction of Kadiivka (formerly Stakhanov, non-government-controlled, 50km west of Luhansk) and in areas close to the disengagement area near Zolote (government-controlled, 60km west of Luhansk).

Following agreement reached at the meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group on 22 July 2020 regarding additional measures to strengthen the ceasefire, from 00:01 on 27 July 2020 until the end of the reporting period, the SMM has recorded at least 31,076 ceasefire violations in both Donetsk and Luhansk regions (including 10,065 explosions, 4,877 projectiles in flight, 227 muzzle flashes, 107 illumination flares and at least 15,800 bursts and shots).
