Ukrainian defense minister outlines next stage of defense reform

The next stage of the military reform in Ukraine will be the transfer of management processes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to a new doctrinal base by 2022.

Defense Minister Andriy Taran stated this during a video conference with Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine Larisa Galadza, the Defense Ministry’s press service reports.

“The transfer of management processes and principles of functioning of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to a new doctrinal base by the end of 2022 is an ambitious goal of the defense reform that we have just launched,” the press service cited the minister as saying.

According to Taran, such a goal requires the training of specialists capable of acting in accordance with provisions of the new doctrinal base.

The defense minister noted that the implementation of the agreement on cooperation in the field of institutional defense reform, signed between the defense departments of the two countries on August 19, is a vivid example of Canada's support for defense reform in Ukraine and efforts to achieve this goal.

In addition, during the conversation, the Canadian side presented the PROTECT project that will strengthen institutional capacities and invest in human resources in order to further implement Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

Taran thanked the Government of Canada and personally Larisa Galadza for the continued support of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry and Armed Forces on the way to implement defense reform in accordance with NATO standards.
