Ukraine and Japan discuss cooperation in security sector - NSDC

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) Oleksandr Turchynov and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Takashi Kurai have discussed the issues of cooperation between Ukraine and Japan in the security sector and the reform of the Ukrainian defense-industrial complex, according to the NSDC press service.

"The parties discussed the deepening of cooperation between Ukraine and Japan in the security sector. Special attention was paid to the reform of the domestic defense-industrial complex and possibilities for deepening and enhancing the bilateral cooperation in this area,” the statement says.

During the meeting, the situation in eastern Ukraine in the context of hybrid aggression of the Russian Federation was also discussed. Turchynov stressed the importance of maintaining sanction pressure on the Russian Federation and coordinating at the international level the counteraction to Russian aggression.

In turn, Takashi Kurai reaffirmed Japan's unwavering position on non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea and the support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The ambassador stressed that Japan is interested in deepening the bilateral cooperation with Ukraine at all levels, the NSDC press service reported.

As Ukrinform reported, new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan Takashi Kurai has begun his diplomatic mission in Ukraine in January 2019.
